Teaser Trailer
The audience is immediately drawn to the teaser trailer because at first you are not sure whether or not you are watching a teaser trailer as the footage used looks like a home movie. This is because, as you find out, the camera operator is creating a home movie leaving video for the character Rob. This gives the audience the feeling that the event actually happened to people and makes them feel as though it wasn’t staged.
The sounds used in this teaser trailer are part of the key aspects in attracting the audience. The non-diegetic music used in this teaser trailer is disguised as diegetic music as it sounds like it is in the background in the room, but when you listen more carefully you see that the sound doesn’t jump to a different part in the song when the camera changes to filming a different person at a different time, also the music is the same volume no matter where the camera person is standing in the room. Once the explosion is heard the non-diegetic music then ends. This makes the audience then focus more on the explosion and what is about to happen next.
The editing used is another key aspect. Even though the camera angle that is used is meant to make you think that it is a home movie it actually jumps to different clips. The cutting speed that it uses is usually quite fast. It uses an irregular cutting rhythm. Although usually an irregular cutting rhythm is usually ineffective it works really well with the home movie style of filming.
The mise-en-scene that is used helps to create the sense that this is a home movie. The costumes that are used in the teaser trailer are mainly suits for men and party dresses for women that are modern. This helps to get the audience to relate to the characters as they would probably be familiar with a colleague/friend’s leaving party.
The use of camera angles also plays a very important part in this teaser trailer as they are trying to create a home movie style of film professionally. It uses zoom in, panning, tracking, mid shots and close ups. The use of the different camera angles helps to keep the audience interested and not appear to look like just another home movie.
Tension is built in the trailer when the camera shows the head of The Statue of Liberty rolling down the street after the explosion. This is because The Statue of Liberty is a very iconic statue and very important to America and seeing it destroyed might shock people and leave them asking the questions who or what destroyed the statue.
The teaser trailer ends with the credits, but after they have appeared there is a clip afterwards where one of the characters says “Tonight’s gonna be the best night ever” this might have influence over the audience because it might make them think about the film and how the film will be the best film ever.
Poster

The image on this poster shows an iconic place, The Statue of Liberty in America, but not as it is supposed to be. The head and part of the upper body from The Statue of Liberty has been broken off and there is an explosion towards the end of the water and the edge of the city. This would grab the attention of the audience and cause interest because The Statue of Liberty is a very well recognised landmark and it might frighten people as they discover that it has been damaged to that extent. This image is very relevant in capturing the audience’s attention and would leave them fascinated to discover why and how damage to The Statue of Liberty happened. There is a slogan to the poster that is written at the top which reads: “Some thing has found us”. This line would create a big interest for people as it can be taken as quite alarming and mysterious. The audience would be left wondering whether this was an alien attack or something from earth. It would leave them with many unanswered questions, which will only be answered when they watch the film. The framing of the poster has the image placed in the golden section of the rule of thirds. The main part of the poster has been placed on the left hand side with the background of the buildings cutting just below the half-way line. By doing this the eye is first of all drawn to the detail in the image on the left (The Statue of Liberty), seeing the damage to the statue. As the eye is then drawn to the background, this sets the scene as to where the event is actually taking place. This helps the audience to assess the situation and then form their own opinion as to what has happened or what will happen.
Representaion
In the teaser trailer the characters are represented stereotypically. They are an American group of people, who are all dressed in a very modern way. They act stereotypically scared once unknown things occur. Both male and females are present. The female characters are represented stereotypically as being more scared when the unknown things occur. The male characters are seen stereotypically as being more brave. The main male character acts brave and want to find out what is going on and takes control.
Audience
Rating: PG-13 in America, 15 in United Kingdom
Genre: Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Rated: 7.5/10 by 127,697 people
Overall
Although I was unable to find a magazine cover advertising ‘Cloverfield’ to go with the teaser trailer and poster a link is still noticeable between the two. In the teaser trailer the audience would be drawn in by the explosion where the Statue of Liberty’s head is knocked off the statue and rolls down the street. This is because a famous landmark is used and the sense of the unknown (as they characters are unaware what made the statue’s head break off). The use of the famous landmark is repeated in the poster with the now headless statue on the front and the use of the tag-line “Some thing has found us”, which shows the sense of the unknown.
