Brief

For my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I needed to select my assignment brief. The brief that I selected was to create a teaser trailer as the main text and a magazine front cover and a poster as the two ancillary texts. Throughout my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I will carry out primary and secondary research into existing products of these texts as well as carry out my own research primary research. From this I will then need to do planning for my production, before it can take place. After production I will then evaluate it’s success.

Research: Primary (Adventure: The Mummy Returns Analysis)

The Mummy Returns
Teaser Trailer

The audience is immediately drawn to the teaser trailer by mysterious music and costumes worn by the two actors as they are ancient Egyptian.
The sound is a key aspect in luring the audience into the teaser trailer. There is non-diegetic music which begins by creating a sense of suspense; this would make the audience want to find out the reason for the suspense – what had occurred before hand and what was going to happen. The non-diegetic music then increases to very fast pace music as the action in the visual builds. The non-diegetic music is very important as it sets the pace for the camera shots and builds tension for the audience. There is a non-diegetic voiceover which draws the audience in by using lines such as “the day is coming” and “the forces are gathering”. This will interest the audience as they want answers to what is happening and why? By using diegetic dialogue from the film the audience are drawn as they hear little pieces of conversation between the characters.
The editing uses a fast cutting to show lots of action that occurs in a small space of time. The cutting rhythm is irregular because at the beginning of the teaser trailer the cutting speed is approximately four seconds to slowly introduce the audience as to what is going on, but as the teaser trailer continues the action is increased as is the speed at which each shot is cut.
The mise-en-scene that is used helps to divide modern and ancient. This is done through costume as the modern character wear modern shirts and trousers and the ancient character wear Ancient Egyptian clothing. Props that are used to help define this further are vehicles and guns for the modern characters and the Ancient Egyptian characters have ancient double sided axes.
There are many camera angles used to help build up the tension, show different scenes and create action. High angle, zoom out, mid shot, low angle, close up, tracking, long shot and panning shots are used to show a action in a variety of angels in order to interest the audience.
The main characters are not introduced straight away, but by use of non-diegetic voiceover the scene is set. Then part way through the teaser trailer the audiences are familiarised with the main characters that they recognised from the first film. Brief diegetic dialogue is then heard between the characters.
A sense of suspense is then created through non-diegetic music, the non-diegetic voiceover saying “most terrifying power on earth” and the fast editing pace.
The teaser trailer then ends with the title, a mid shot of a monster to scare the audience, the month of release and then the credits.

Magazine
The image on the front cover has the main character in the centre of the frame. Post-production work has been done on the magazine to make the character appear in front of the main heading. This would grab the audience’s attention because a) the image appears to be in front b) the audience might recognise the character from the previous film and c) they might recognise the actor.
The main heading is the title of the magazine reading “Empire” and is in a large red font place at the top of the magazine. Then the sub-heading on the magazine is in the bottom right hand corner. It reads: “The Mummy Returns”, which is the title of the film. The typography is large and white that is easy to read and white to stand out from the brown background.
The colour scheme of this magazine is brown and white. There is brown in the characters trousers which has then been used as the background, this is darker on the left hand side and becomes lighter towards the right. The white from the characters shirt is then used as the white in the background on the right hand side and in the text. There are boxes on the left hand side which are advertising other things in the magazine. By being on the left hand side they do not take the attention away from the image, as this is in the centre, or the sub-heading, which is on the right.

Poster
Six of the images on the front of the poster are of the main characters. Five of theses are close ups of their faces. Showing the faces of the main characters would grab the audience’s attention because they would recognise the characters from the previous film, which might make the audience, want to see it or just recognise the actors.
There are symbols of hieroglyphics either side of the group of actors. An army of fighters can also be seen as well as two people fighting (at the bottom). These image add to the interest that the audience have to find out how they link together and what the plot is going to be about.
The whole of the poster is in an orange/gold colour. By doing this, the poster appears old fashioned, this might interest people, as there are hieroglyphics in the background and it might make them think back to the Ancient Egyptian times. The use of it looking gold is that it might make the audience think of treasure and with the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics people might thing of gold as Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs were rich and buried with their belongings.
The title of the poster is positioned two thirds of the way down with the ‘M’ in the middle of the word ‘Mummy’ glowing. The type face that this uses is the same as the one in the film, which helps the audience to recognise it.

Representation
The teaser trailer, magazine frotn cover and poster views the main male character stereotypically. He reacts violently to the creatures that he doesn't like and has a bad temper.

Collective Identity
Americans are seen as angry and running away from things and violent.

Audience
Rating: PG-13 in America, 12 in United Kingdom
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Horror, Thriller
Rated: 6.2/10 by 64,254 people

Overall
The main male character is the link between the teaser trailer, magazine front cover and the poster. This is because he appears on all three of them and is the dominant character in the teaser trailer.
