Brief

For my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I needed to select my assignment brief. The brief that I selected was to create a teaser trailer as the main text and a magazine front cover and a poster as the two ancillary texts. Throughout my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I will carry out primary and secondary research into existing products of these texts as well as carry out my own research primary research. From this I will then need to do planning for my production, before it can take place. After production I will then evaluate it’s success.

Research: Primary (Adventure: Pirates of the Caribbean Analysis)

Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl
Teaser Trailer

The start of the teaser trailer attracts the attention of the audience with its stereotypical pirate themed non-diegetic music. This music occurs throughout the teaser trailer up until the non-diegetic voiceover where non-diegetic sword clashing can be heard. The use of the non-diegetic music is to create a sense of tension as a battle is sensed. The use of the non-diegetic sword sound effects is to build upon the tension that has been created and to emphasis a battle.
The editing has an average cutting rate with a cutting speed of four seconds. Its cutting rhythm is irregular as there are some longer clips and some shorter ones. The use of an irregular cutting rhythm is effective for the audience as it allows them to not only see quick location shots but also establishes the setting of larger locations. The use of the screen of text is also useful in introducing the audience to what they are about to see.
The mise-en-scene uses different locations such as the sun set; the sea and palm trees to help set the location for the audience as there are no characters or props.
There are not a variety of camera angles used. Close ups, high angles and zoom in are the frequently used angles in the teaser trailer. The use of the high angle shot over the sea, where text is overlaid is reused on a number of occasions.
There is no narrative given away and no characters have been introduced, only settings. By only introducing setting and not giving away and characters or plot this leaves the audience guessing and intrigued as to what will happen and who the characters are. They would also be interested in the film from the names of the actors that are present in the film, which may make them want to watch it.
After the main title and credits have been displayed there is a quick clip of a bony foot stepping hard onto sandy ground, before more detailed credits appear. The use of this final shot is to interest the audience and it leaves them guessing and wondering what it is.

Magazine
The image on the front cover of this magazine uses a mid-shot of the main character. The use of this is to attract the audience’s attention as they may recognise the actor or like the costume that the character is wearing as the image of footage from the actual film. The background has been edited out so as not to give away any of the location and to create a greater focus on the character.
The main heading of the magazine is positioned above the main character’s head with the main character positioned just in front of the heading making the main character appear to stand out. The typography is in a green coloured font to represent slime as it is a children’s film magazine. The sub-heading has been inserted as a logo from the actual film as the typography is the same font size, style and colour as well as the background that it is laid upon.
There is a colour scheme present on this magazine cover. This colour scheme is red as red is used in the background to outline some of the text and parts of the costume which the main character is wearing are red.

Poster

The image on the front of the poster is animated, although the film is not. This would have been used to attract the attention of the younger audiences. It is situated in the middle of the frame and at a diagonal angle, following the diagonal line from the top right hand corner to the bottom left.
The title of the film has been placed at the bottom of the poster. It is in white and uses a curled typography; this is the same typography used as the title of the film in the film. By using the same typography this allows the audience to feel familiarised and to easily be able to link this poster with the correct film. Below the title are the credits of the film. They are in a lot smaller font and in white. Three of the character’s names have been written at the top of the poster and are in red. This matches the film slogan at the bottom of the poster which is also in red that reads “be ready to be blown out of the water”.

Representation
No characters are present in the teaser trailer or the poster, so no one is being represented. On the magazine front cover shows the main character his is subversively showing the male gender as he is dressed in fancy clothes. His character is also stereotypical as he is dressed as a stereotypical pirtae and the film title shows that the film is about pirates.

Collective Identity
The collective identity of the magazine front cover shows Americans as pirates.

Audience
Rating: PG-13 in America, 12A in United Kingdom
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Rated: 8.0/10 by 215,599 people

Overall
There is a link between the teaser trailer and the poster as at the end of the teaser trailer, after the credits there is a clip of a skelenton leg walking and the image on the poster is of a skelenton steering a ship. THis then links the poster to teh magzine fron tcover because the steering wheel used by the skelenton to steer the boat is stereotypically linked to a pirate ship and the character on the front of the magazine is a pirate.
