Brief

For my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I needed to select my assignment brief. The brief that I selected was to create a teaser trailer as the main text and a magazine front cover and a poster as the two ancillary texts. Throughout my A2 Media Advanced Production Portfolio I will carry out primary and secondary research into existing products of these texts as well as carry out my own research primary research. From this I will then need to do planning for my production, before it can take place. After production I will then evaluate it’s success.

Research: Primary (The Da Vinci Code Analysis)

The Da Vinci Code
Teaser Trailer

The beginning of this teaser trailer starts with quiet, slow, high, non-diegetic music. This become louder and continues throughout the whole of the teaser trailer. It is a key aspect because it creates an eerie and mysterious feeling towards the audience as they watch it. There is also a diegetic voice over throughout the teaser trailer who says lines that interest the audience into wanting to watch the film. Also, by the voiceover saying: “No matter what you have read” it makes people who have read the book think that they should go and see the film, because even though they already know the story line the film will still amaze them.
The whole of the teaser trailer shows a very close up view of the painting: The Mona Lisa. The camera follows what at first looks like the surface of flat-topped rocks, and then it ventures inside the rock-like gaps where rough edges of what look like rocks are seen. Writing appears on the sides of what appears to be rocks or the bark of a tree. Then the camera rises up, back to the top of what looks like flat-topped-rocks. After the camera the zooms out it can be seen that what appeared to look like rocks were actually cracks in a painting of The Mona Lisa, which then shatters into a million pieces. There are not characters introduces or story line or plot revealed. This could either be because they are expecting to people to have read the book or they don’t want to give the plot away or both.

Magazine

The main image on the magazine looks studio based set up in costume to look like a movie shot. It has a mid shot of the main character on the left hand side of the magazine looking into the camera and another character behind them towards the right hand side of the magazine turning to face the camera. This image has full cover of the magazine.
The main title of the magazine is placed over the top of the photograph that is large, in red and reads: “EMPIRE.” There is a sub-title that reads: “The Da Vinci Code”. The “The” and “Code” are written in a smaller type face than ‘Da” and “Vinci”. I think that this is because “Da Vinci” is a name that lots of people would recognise because he was a famous painter, which would attract the audience’s attention as they might want to find out what the film is about because they recognise the artist’s name. Other people would be drawn to the magazine through the sub-title as they have read the book.
One small graphical circle is present towards the right hand side of the magazine, which would draw the audience’s attention after they have seen the main image which would probably direct them to a place in the magazine to turn to. There is a colour scheme present in the magazine. This is red and gold. The main title is red and there are letters highlighted in the text at the bottom of the magazine in red. Then sub-title is then in gold as are the bottom edges of the magazine.

Poster

On the poster is a large image of part of a face, the Mona Lisa. It is shown to look like it has been painted and that the paint is cracking away. This image covers most of the poster. The shadows become darker around the edges of the face so feature such as ears and hair cannot be seen. This would have been done so that the audience make eye contact with the eyes. Below the nose is another image that looks like a page turning and makes it look as if the Mona Lisa is the face is the page and it is being turned. The used of the dark edges and the turning page is to create a sense of mystery and perhaps interest the people who have not read the book.
There is a slight amount of text on the poster. It reads the title of the film: “The Da Vinci code” and underneath it in a smaller type face is the date that the film came out “05.19.06”. The ‘A’ in ‘DA’ is not crossed so it appears to look like an upside down ‘V’, this is used to get the audience’s attention as they notice that a letter appears different to how they usually see it. There is also some even smaller font on the poster, but due to the poster quality I cannot read it. There is not a lot of text on this poster because they expect that people already know what happens as they have read the book. That way only an image is needed for people to associate the film with the book that they have read.

Representation
No characters are introduced in the teaser trailer. In the magazine two male characters are introduced. Both characters keep eye contact with the with the audience as they are looking forwards. The character in the background on the right hand side of the frame has been represented stereotypically as an evil character. This is because he has his hood up which is hiding his face and only half of his face is facing the audience.

Collective Identity
Although there are no characters shown in the teaser trailer or on the poster two characters can be seen on the magazine front cover. As it is American, the Americans are viewed as sneaky and suspicious as there is a hooded character in the background that looks suspicious.

Audience
Rating: PG -13in America, 12A in United Kingdom
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Rated: 6.4/10 by 109,876 people

Overall
From the teaser trailer and the poster not a lot about the film has been given away. The painting of the Mona Lisa has been used to attract people’s attention. This would be because the Mona Lisa is a famous painting therefore recognised worldwide and it was painted by Da Vinci and the film is The Da Vinci Code. Despite this the magazine takes a different advertising approach. On the magazine cover are two of the main actors from the film. This might then persuade people to see the film because they like the actor.
